Modal verbs for request are used when we want to ask someone to do something.

  • Can is used in informal context.

    • Mum, can you tell me the time, please?
    • Can you pass me the salt, Peter?
    • Can you take me this sweater, please?
    • Can I take one, please?

  • Could is used to be polite (formal) or to ask for a "big favour".

    • Excuse me, could you give me a lift to the nearest petrol station, please?
    • Sir, could you close the window, please?
    • Could I make a phone call, please?
    • Could I be wrong?

  • Will / Would

    • Will you help me with these suitcases, please?
    • Will you open me this door, please?
    • Would you close the window, please?
    • Would you carry this for me, please?

Would is less common.
