When I finished my degree and after having a training period I got a job as an assistant to a hotel manager. I was happy since I thought this was an excellent way in for my future career as hotel manager myself. However, my every day working reality was very different from what I expected. I had to carry out some unexpected "extra duties" my boss asked me to do for him.
For instance, I was asked to make personal appointments for him: calling his doctor, his "close friends", his barber, his mechanic or even l his gym and his masseur. This happened very often because he loved sport. When he moved into a new apartment I had to phone the plumber, the electrician and the air conditioning technician, and I had to deal with the moving people as well.
I had to book tickets for the cinema and for football matches. Because my boss was paying a mortgage he often asked me to go to the bank as I was in charge of the management of his payment.
What is more, sometimes I was asked to do things for my boss's relatives. I once had to photocopy his son's notebook and bind her daughter's final school project. I chose and bought presents for his family, including books and toys for the children and an exotic flower arrangement and silk scarf on his wife's birthday.
In short, your duties are many more than those studied at school or university or the ones included in the job ad, but a bit of patience and a lot of common sense will help you to handle these situations successfully and even receive your boss's congratulations.
